Media City Qatar signs MoU with Qatar University to Foster Media Education and Practical Experience in Qatar

Media City Qatar (MCQ) and Qatar University (QU) have joined forces by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Qatar Economic Forum on May 15, 2024, to offer comprehensive media education programs to current students and recent graduates of QU. This collaboration aims to nurture future media professionals in Qatar, in alignment with the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030, focusing on building an education-based media society.

The collaboration offers a variety of hands-on learning experiences, including shadowing and internship programs with MCQ’s licensees and partners. These programs, available both in Doha and internationally, are designed to provide QU students and recent graduates with real-world exposure in multiple media disciplines.

The initiative encompasses a broad spectrum of media fields such as journalism, editorial work, broadcasting, media production, and other related areas, aiming to equip students with the essential skills needed in today's dynamic media environment.

H.E. Sheikh Dr. Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, Chairman of Media City Qatar, shared his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "Through this MoU with Qatar University, we are setting a robust platform for aspiring media professionals. Our goal is to integrate practical learning opportunities with academic education to cultivate a skilled workforce that will drive the future of Qatar’s media industry. This initiative not only supports our national vision but also strengthens our position as a leading media hub in the region."

Dr. Omar Al-Ansari, President of Qatar University commented on the collaboration, said: “We sign this agreement with Media City marking our commitment towards the Qatar National Vision 2030, moving forward towards a path where knowledge empowers and innovation thrives. Through our collaborative program, we will nurture the next generation of leaders in journalism, broadcasting, and media production, equipping them with not only theoretical knowledge but also invaluable practical experience. This partnership exemplifies our shared dedication to a future where education and media converge to further opportunity and progress for our future media leaders.”

The MoU sets a comprehensive framework for both entities to contribute effectively to the educational and professional development of the country’s youth, further enhancing the attractiveness of Qatar as a thriving hub for media innovation and education.

Spotlight on media’s influential role at the Qatar Economic Forum

His Excellency Sheikh Dr Abdullah bin Ali bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman of Media City Qatar, highlighted the pivotal role the nation’s media sector plays in driving the success of major economic conferences, including the upcoming Qatar Economic Forum.

In an exclusive interview ahead of the forum’s fourth edition, HE highlighted the media’s significant impact in shaping public opinion through the rapid dissemination of accurate, reliable and timely information. HE underscored its crucial contributions to policy creation, fostering dialogue and steering economic discourse on various pressing issues and developments.

 Addressing key challenges, the Chairman pointed to the excessive influx of information and the accelerated pace of news transmission. He added: “While breaking news is paramount, analysing events within their proper context poses a fundamental test. Direct engagement with leaders and decision-makers has become imperative to shape nuanced perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of critical issues.”

HE lauded the nation’s concerted efforts to build a robust media sector, made possible through investments in tech talents, an advanced ICT infrastructure, as well as initiatives propelling the knowledge economy, entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems.

“Our collaboration with Bloomberg has enabled us to harness a wealth of media expertise while expanding our global outreach,” he added. “This has solidified Qatar's standing as an influential media hub in the region and a nexus for global cooperation and knowledge exchange.”

Speaking on its strategies to support the media sector’s development amidst rapid technological progress, HE affirmed Media City Qatar’s commitment to staying ahead, stressing the media sector’s role in growing the country’s Gross Domestic Product and supporting the economic diversification goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.

HE the Chairman revealed that Media City Qatar will initially focus on strategic media sectors, such as radio broadcasting, content production, digital publishing, electronic games and artificial intelligence. To nurture local entrepreneurship, HE revealed plans to open new avenues for their success, expressing his aspirations of Qatar's ascent as a creativity hub and a thriving epicentre for media enterprises, innovators and entrepreneurs.

The Qatar Economic Forum, Powered by Bloomberg and hosted in partnership with Media City Qatar, will run until May 16th. The forum convenes prominent thought leaders, industry pioneers and decision-makers from around the world to discuss pressing economic matters, forge partnerships and exchange expertise.

Doha, Qatar – Media City Qatar (MCQ) proudly announces its collaboration with Qatar Museums for the exhibition, “Your Ghosts Are Mine: Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices,” at the renowned Venice Biennale, the art world’s most prestigious festival.

Displayed at ACP–Palazzo Franchetti from 20th April to 24th November 2024, the exhibition features over 40 works by diverse directors from the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. These cinematic narratives delve into contemporary themes of community, memory, transnationalism, and displacement.

Media City Qatar is honored to support this significant showcase, providing a platform for filmmakers from Qatar, the Arab world, and beyond.
